Northeastern University is filled with colors and vibrancy, graffiti and murals. And now, Daniel Anguilu is coming back to brighten up his wilting mural on the pedestrian bridge. This talented street artist will also be fixing the retaining wall by the Curry Student Center. Anguilu has also added a circular, wheel-type pattern along the ramp. The colored stripes and the ‘wheel’ impression would make his art more accessible, more understanding to people on wheels, according to Anguilu.
Anguilu is a resident of Houston and has painted his skills at places, including the United States, Mexico, Peru, and Italy. He said, “To really enjoy the original mural, you have to walk around it to see it from all angles. But now, you have to move in it. It’s about the experience of moving through this piece on wheels.” This mural is a vibrant amalgamation of blue, green, and purple. This work of his found inspiration in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude, written by Gabriel Garcia Márquez.
The artwork, obviously, comes under President Joseph E. Aoun’s Public Art Initiative, a platform for artists for beautifying the campus. While Greg Astro has painted two murals in the campus, Mile MacGregor has painted a mural representing a beautiful blend of art and science. Anguilu has worked with them before and in reference to them, said, “The culture of graffiti is about how we use our materials to create an experience. Our murals are all connected, not through the content, but through our connection with our tools”.
Anguilu has high hopes from his mural and thinks that people will get a blissful experience from it. “I’ve been thinking a lot about who gets to enjoy my work and how I want it to cater to everyone,” he said. “It’s fun and challenging to try and put yourself in someone else’s shoes to create art that everyone can enjoy.”
