Tik Tok is a social media platform which has gained a lot of attention in the past few years. It gained popularity because of the situation and time of its release and also because of the similar platforms that were there before Tik Tok. Musically and Vine preceded this app in this market. While Vine had a successful start as well, but with the introduction of Musically, Vine lost its customers. The reason was that Musically gave its customers everything that Vine gave, but at a much lesser cost. Tik Tok, on the other hand, has what musically gave but with better features. Tik Tok’s success was expected.
People of all ages joined Tik Tok. This app made everything easy. One can easily load content, search for recent contents, and upload and download videos. With all these features, more people were attracted to this social media platform. This world got so big that videos started getting more diverse. People started uploading videos about nature, schools, colleges, and strikes apart from just the movie dialogue mimicry which was initially done. In recent days, Tik Tok saw one more addition. People started uploading videos related to politics as well. They started raising their opinion about how they love or hate politics through Tik Tok. While this sounds like a new opportunity, it has its demerits as well.
Nicholas Beauchamp, an assistant professor of Political Science at Northeastern University, pointed out that this platform is a social media stage that does not allow any user to track down the origin of any content. With this being the case, there is a possibility that people will misuse the platform by spreading rumors. And short videos like these go viral in a very short period, sometimes with an irreversible effect. Beauchamp went ahead to say that, with this new trend, people will fall prey to false news, and all one can do, is stay sceptical about the news going viral. Tik Tok is a great platform for showcasing talent, but it requires more time to become reliable for political news.
