The Goldwater scholarship is an extremely prestigious scholarship awarded to students who plan on pursuing research careers, namely in mathematics, natural science, and engineering. Gina Duronio, Erica Wagner, and Claire Williams, who study science and engineering at Northeastern University, have been rewarded with Goldwater Scholarships to support their pursuit of careers in oncology, drug development, and climate science. These three have worked at extremely prestigious research centres from around the world and put in immense efforts to try and improve the survival rates of patients with gastrointestinal cancers. They have also worked to treat pain and help save endangered species.
Gina Duronio is a fourth-year student of Northeastern University and is currently studying the role of mutated proteins in colorectal and oesophageal cancers. She is majoring in molecular biology and mathematics, and plans on earning a medical degree and doctorate in molecular biology. Erica Wagner, is a third-year student of the same university. She has worked under Ambika Bajpayee, an assistant bioengineering professor, and studied kidney disease. Wagner has been focused on creating a specific kind of drug delivery system. Clair Williams is also a fourth-year student of Northeastern University, majoring in biochemistry with a keen interest towards environmental sustainability she has gone on to study the microbiome of honey bees at the Rowland Institute at Harvard.
Being exhilarated on receiving this prestigious scholarship, Duronio describes her emotions as a combination of excitement and surprise, while Wagner feels extremely honoured and good about the fact that others will be able to see her substantial work. Williams expresses her future plans of being a professor and her desire to have her own lab at some university where she will be able to carry out her own research.
