Educational institutions from around the world focus on providing top class infrastructure and facilities to aid in providing practical hands-on experience, resulting in better knowledge of the concepts. This will also help in building an environment for the much-needed research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. Northeastern University is planning to construct an eight storey, 350,000-square-foot research centre on Columbus Avenue called the “EXP”.
The construction of EXP is slated to begin next year and is expected to be completed by 2023. This building is said to include teaching and research labs, a cafe, a faculty club, and landscaped green space. This preliminary rendering shows a facility that will include state-of-the-art labs, dedicated space to support the university’s innovative work in autonomous vehicles, drones, and humanoid robots, and a maker space to promote collaboration between students across disciplines.
James C. Bean, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Northeastern says, “It’s very exciting, and it’s going to help us attract more top faculty and more top students because those great facilities will make it easier for them to do world-class work.” Bean also says that their research is focused on the challenges of health, security, and sustainability and this would help in enhancing all three of those.
Discussing the various floors of EXP, Kathy Spiegelman, vice president and chief of campus planning and development at Northeastern, says that the first storey of the building is said to include the robotics program and make space for the students to work on their projects will be accommodated on the second floor. The third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh floors will be dedicated to research and teaching labs and classrooms while the eighth floor will hold executive offices, the faculty club, and a boardroom.
“The new facility will advance Northeastern’s commitment to research and integration across disciplines, and this is how we want the world to see us.” Bean concludes.
