Tesla’s powerwall for home energy storage

The Powerwall and Powerpack are rechargeable lithium-ion battery, stationary energy storage products manufactured by Tesla. The Powerwall is intended to be used for home energy storage and stores electricity for solar self-consumption, at the time of use load shifting, as backup power, and for off-the-grid use. The larger Powerpack is intended for commercial or electric utility grid use and can be used for peak shaving, load shifting, backup power, demand response, micro grids, renewable power integration, frequency regulation, and voltage control.

The Tesla Powerwall has the ability to maximise the self-consumption of an onsite solar system. This is accomplished by storing up power during the day and using that stored power as needed to power the home. Solar panels absorb photons (sunlight) in a rooftop installation. DC (Direct current) electricity is then created from the solar panels. DC cannot be used in the home, and thus has to be converted to AC (Alternating Current) electricity with an inverter. The energy that is created is either used to power our house, fed back into the grid (if applicable) or stored using our Tesla Powerwall. We can manage all of this using a cloud-based app.

In this era where every second thing depends on the electricity, the Tesla Powewall is of huge importance. It powers your home with solar energy at any time of the day. It reduces your power bills by charging during off-peak times. It also saves extra power for your home. In addition, it can be installed and used indoor or outdoor. We can also backup our home by keeping lights, refrigerator, and Wi-Fi running during outages.

Sanjeev Mukherjee is a professor of Materials/Physics Chemistry and director of the Northeastern University Centre for Renewable Energy Technology. He said,”The lithium batteries used in Tesla cars have a high degree of tolerance, or reliability, a hobbyist can put a home battery like this together, but most people in this country aren’t hobbyists. They just want to know if they can go out and buy a ready-made solution”. Therefore, it is clear from his quote that we all face day to day problems in our surrounding but only a few people innovate something to sort out those problems with their great creative power.
