Storytelling has immense power in connecting and influencing people. It is an art form that has been used since the beginning of language to pass on people’s experiences and stories. It still holds that immense power of attracting people and passing down histories. Thus, an event organised by Northeastern University that celebrated stories. It was called the ‘Women Who Empower’ summit. Guests like entrepreneurs, award-winning producers, professors, and best-selling authors were present in the event to share their stories.
“Stories are a means for us to share our experience; they’re also a means for us to create shared experiences,” says the senior vice president for university advancement at Northeastern University, Diane MacGillivray.
The event not only had big names who shared their stories in front of the large audience of 250 but the students and alumni as well. In the audience were entrepreneurs, students, faculty, and staff.
“Stories are a means for us to share our experience; they’re also a means for us to create shared experiences,” says Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun.
2019, Netflix documentary film producer, Nina Fialkow shares her experience of exploring the new ways that companies use social media sites to collect data, which is later utilised in many other ways. The documentary also tells how social media sites are becoming a bigger source of data for the companies and the mainstream media platforms as well. Social media has now become a source of instant news and hence its usage is not only constantly increasing but also diversifying.
“The work of documentarians is about telling a good story,” Fialkow said. “I think documentarians are working hard to be truth-tellers.”
Social media has information about everyone and everything these days. Where a person is, who he is meeting, what he likes, and so much more. It has become extremely easy to track someone on social media now. An associate professor of computer science, Tina Eliassi-Rad said at Northeastern, “We can find out a lot about you, just from your social media profiles.”
