Road map to a sustainable transportation system

A transport network, or transportation network is a realisation of a spatial network, describing a structure which permits either vehicular movement or flow of some commodity. Examples include but are not limited to road networks, railways, air routes, pipelines, aqueducts, and power lines. Transport is important because it enables communication, trade, and other forms of exchange between people, which in turn establishes civilisation Transport plays an important part in economic growth and globalisation, but most types cause air pollution and use large amounts of land. By moving goods from locations where they are sourced to locations where they are demanded, transportation provides the essential service of linking a company to its suppliers and customers. It is an essential activity in the logistics function, supporting the economic utilities of place and time.

Because of its intensive use of infrastructures, the transport sector is an important component of the economy and a common tool used for development. At the aggregate level, efficient transportation reduces costs in many economic sectors, while inefficient transportation increases these costs. Therefore, sustainable transportation plays a very prominent role. Sustainable transport can save your money, improve your health, and reduce your environmental footprint. It involves walking for short trips or using a cycle instead of a vehicle for a short distance. We can also plan a journey in a group, considering car-pooling or have a local adventure. We should also make low emissions a priority. By doing these, we can contribute a lot to make transportation sustainable.

Stephanie Pollack, associate director of the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy in Northeastern’s School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs, noted a decades-long shift in public thinking about the environmental impact of energy consumption. She said a similar movement must be directed toward sustainable transportation.

“We haven’t been able to make that paradigm shift on transportation because we don’t know what the transportation equivalent of the megawatt is,” Pollack said.
