Outside the classroom

“One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world,” said Malala Yousafzai.

A teacher is someone who has the future of the nation in her hands. A teacher’s teachings make a student accomplish anything in his life. No one should ever forget their teacher who taught them to write their first words. However, the teaching pattern has been progressively changed now. Various smart classrooms have been provided to the students to make their learning better. But what about the educational resource? The quality of the educational resource should be good enough to help a teacher teach students better.

Here comes into play the, Northeastern University which has a Marine Science Center who has created a new series of online educational resources for science teachers to use inside and outside the classroom. The website aims at translating the research completed by the students and faculty members of the Northeastern University into lesson plans for teachers covering every level of education, with lessons suited for students from early elementary school through high school.

“Originally we developed these materials for teachers who were planning on coming to the center for a field trip. Then we thought: Why not make this accessible for all teachers? ” said Valerie Perini, outreach program coordinator at the Marine Science Center.

The resource includes powerpoint presentations, wildlife identification packs, and activities for the classrooms and outdoors. The teachers really liked the case studies involved in it as it allows students to get a tangible answer as to what they could do with a degree in marine science.

“We hope to create more access to marine science research and activities that can help students better understand what a career here might entail,” said Perini.

A step taken by the Marine Science Center of the Northeastern University is commendable and helps students explore outside their classrooms. This is what really is the need of the hour.
