MassChallenge is a global accelerator programme for the companies that are in their early stages. And two start-up companies, Mobile Pixels and Boston Materials founded by members of the Northeastern University community have become the receivers of a total amount of $150,000.
Mobile Pixels received $100,000. They came up with a design of a second screen that can be attached to laptops. This creation aims to increase the productivity. Boston Materials, the other company to win $50,000 is a producer of strong carbon fiber composite materials that could be used to manufacture sports equipment and aircraft components. The fiber is also used to make other products that are lighter than ever but as durable as ever.
The money received by Boston Materials will be used to purchase equipment for testing the composite materials to reduce the usual time taken to develop the materials from months to weeks. The company was founded with Michael Segal, Anvesh Gurijala, and Randall Erb, who are graduates from Northeastern University and professors there, respectively.
“Thus far we have been relying on outside resources for testing, which has long lead times and are expensive. Bringing material and testing in-house will allow us to iterate at a much quicker rate and to reallocate funds to other crucial aspects of the business”, said the co-founder of Boston Materials, Michael Segal.
The two companies were out of 26 finalists in the MassChallenege Boston programme, 2019. The programme provides workshops, guidance, and mentor-ship for the start-up companies and entrepreneurs to grow their businesses.
“We incorporated a very strategic step-by-step approach to identifying, selecting, and verifying different markets and applications, providing us a more standardised tool for assessing where we should focus our efforts,” Segal said while talking about the MassChallenge programme.
