Emily Shanny graduated from the Northeastern University with a degree in Economics but what she does today is completely different from her what her course had taught her. From the walls of her studio to the margins of her notebooks, art is what Shanny lives in. She is now a multidisciplinary artist in New York who uses art as a voice to speak out about social justice and other topics that may be difficult to discuss otherwise.
Her music albums and live shows stand as true specimens of her immense talent. She also uses her art to educate by raising funds for social entrepreneurs in Nepal. Working with a fellow Northeastern University Graduate, Jason Smith, she gives the credit to her university for providing her with the right opportunities and space to grow into who she wanted to be. Not only did the campus help her make important connections with people, Shanny says, but also helped her gain international exposure being a part of the acapella group Nor’easters.
What Emily Shanny shows us is that, it is never too late to pursue our passions. If there is something that drives us from deep within, it is always worth giving it a chance to grow. True, however, that the right nurturing ground is important for such a venture. This is where Northeastern University is able to stand apart from its contemporaries in being able to deliver lessons to its students, not just through classroom learning, but through the spaces between them as well.
