International Partnership against Cybersecurity Issues

In today’s scenario, internet has become a source to connect and interact with people worldwide. It has its applications in various fields of industry as well. However, getting the focus off from the brighter side for once and considering the cons of the internet, we certainly know how hacking has affected us badly. All the online transactions cannot be called secured. Therefore, to prevent the negative effects the cybersecurity department takes charge.

The Northeastern University proposed an idea to group up with some universities from different countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan to fight and tackle the cybersecurity issues. The universities involved in the pact are Keio University and Kyushu University in Japan, Imperial College London and Royal Holloway, University of London, in the United Kingdom, and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. They are moving in the direction to build an international Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence. The centre will serve as the source of international cybersecurity research, advocacy, and education. The major responsibility of the people involved in the centre is to help the government in developing standards of global cybersecurity. Also, the members would research upon staying ahead of evolving threats and train students. Joseph E. Aoun, the Northeastern President was the one to establish the centre.

“Cybersecurity is a fundamental global challenge that knows no boundaries and can only be solved by international partnerships. We look forward to taking on this challenge with a global network of research institutions,” said Aoun.

The partnership is not an easy walk on the cake; it takes a lot more effort and understanding.

“The challenges this first-of-its-kind partnership aims to solve span a complex set of cybersecurity issues. How do we have effective global standards that take into account, are sensitive to, and incorporate the discontinuities in policy that occur at national boundaries?”, said David Luzzi, the senior vice provost for research at Northeastern University.

The centre requires funding which has been supported by several large corporations such as CISCO, Adobe, Hitachi, NEC, Fujitsu, and Northrop Grumman which are providing the centre with funds. The centre would prove to be of help not only to the industries. This would also help in international events such as the Olympics 2020.

“Members of the consortium have already discussed how to build better security for large, international events such as the 2020 Olympics being held in Tokyo next summer. With so much global attention focused on one location, hackers will have additional incentives and opportunities to disrupt city operations like public transit, competitions, and new technology to help people access the games at home,” said Luzzi.

This partnership is a great move towards cybersecurity. It will also make the students aware about the issue and the ways to tackle it. Thus, moving towards a safe world.
