In the name of security

Homeland security has become a major concern for countries all across the globe. Military equipment and instruments occupy a large portion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of all modern nations, especially in the U.S. With the growth of modern science there destructive capacity of the modern warfare equipment shave also increased, so much so that it is presumed after the next World War there will be no habitable land remaining.

Also, security has in contemporary times become a major deal-breaker in elections. The politician always seeks to gain support on their policies which are based on vested interests by claiming it to be for the security of the nation. Parochialism and nationalism have superseded the greater ideals of humanity and cosmopolitanism. The government funds an array of institutions to develop and advance the defense of the nation ranging from ballistic missile to new stealth aircraft and also construct war machines with the money that should have gone to feed a poor child or get him/her educated.

In the range of universities funded for defense research, the name of Northeastern University is on the top list. Recently the U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton visited the research facilities of the universities thoroughly and came out impressed with the new advancements. There is no issue in funding the University for Research, but the moral responsibility remains on the researcher who is building devices that are going to take lives. The modern world has become a warzone where no one is no one’s ally. In this era where national interest reigns supreme, to say no to activities which are going to be the instruments of violence is heroism. Humanity should build structures, socio-economic and political which rely on solidarity and collective living. The growth of such a competitive world is the result of the demarcation of the land in the lines of the state. Humanity is to transcend these artificials and reach the natural state where everything is in the reach to everyone.
