Health is happiness

When you eat good, you feel good. You are unhappy when you are sick. We have experienced these common feelings related to health and happiness but we are still unaware of how important our health is when it comes to being happy. The key is: ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’. Getting healthy sleep, exercising daily, and eating a balanced diet with  vegetables may sound old-fashioned but believe me; these things will make you happy. Or so found Julie Greengard of Northeastern University when she got an offer for researching happiness on a co-op with World Health Organisation (WHO) in Switzerland. Her research gave important insights on well-being, satisfaction and quality of life being the prime factors in determining or measuring the level of happiness.

She was very influenced by this research. As Greengard put it, “This co-op changed my outlook on life. People often don’t think about the connections between health and happiness.”

Being happy not only alleviates stress, but it also combats depression and lengthens your life expectancy. Who doesn’t want to live longer? A study of more than 7,000 adults found that those with positive well-being were 47% more likely to consume fresh fruits and vegetables than their less positive counterparts. In the same study, researchers found that individuals with positive well-being were 33% more likely to be physically active, with 10 or more hours of physical activity per week. What’s even better is all these ways are everything you can do at home. You only need to provide sufficient time to yourself to be happy; exercising, meditating, and eating healthy.

Our body is a gift; then why not treat it like one? We search for happiness from other people and other worldly and materialistic things. We seldom remember that happiness is something which ignites from within our soul. The same soul which we put in the hands of others to try and persuade them to make us feel happy. No one can make you happy when you aren’t putting any effort for yourself. The pursuit of happiness is not a destination. It’s a journey of being healthy.

Stay healthy, be happy!
