Halloween can sometimes be extremely expensive as it involves costumes which need a lot of creativity and can pinch your pocket a little too hard. However, there are many ways in which you can create your own costumes by using materials that you already have. Poking eyeholes in a white sheet and dressing up as a ghost is too common. And to elaborate further and think beyond for various ideas, Farah Griffin and Rebecca Price from the Department of Theatre’s costume shop at the Northeastern University were interviewed. They could give away numerous ideas because of their experience of working on many theatre productions.
Griffin says that one of the easiest costumes is the transformation of the last year’s costume into its dead version. She gives an example of dressing up like a ‘dead Ariel’ from The Little Mermaid if you were an Ariel last year. Other ideas like taping a quarter to your back or writing ‘Yay Ceilings!’ are great money-savers as they include recycling items that are already used. One can also use themselves as a canvas by dressing themselves like a vending machine and writing prices of various items on it or being in an iPhone costume by having pictures of various applications on it.
Griffin also has interesting ideas for groups and couples. Couples can have a theme of salt and pepper by flaunting the very common white T-shirt and black jeans. Members of a group can wear different coloured T-shirts and they will be skittles! She also suggests that one could attach skittles on their face with spirit gums, this will enhance your M&M’s or Skittles costume.
Price says that you can actually wear different colours and styles and represent Disney characters instead of paying for an actual costume. You can also use your eye-liners to paint on your costumes to enhance their creativity. These are a few of the many ways which can prevent the spending of excessive money on Halloween.
