Exhibition for a cause: Contesting Climate Change with Art

The characteristic feature that distinguishes humans from other creature are their abilities to give a representation of their abstract ideas. And the most viable medium of expression is through Art. Throughout history, Art done for a purpose transcending individualism and exhibiting concern at a broader scale has been the most effective medium of awareness and change. Since humans can always be driven more by emotional appeal than by reason, from the age of Enlightenment to the period of growing nation-states, paintings, sculptures and symbols has been a crucial factor in amassing people for a collective cause.

A major issue of contemporary concern is Climate Change and Global warming. On this question, humanity must form solidarity to survive and art can be a major source of building the foundation. Inspired by a documentary Gasland, a 2010 Academy Award-nominated documentary, Resa Blatman, a blooming Artist of new age, curated an exhibit at Northeastern University at Gallery 360 titled “Forecasted”. The exhibition featured eight local artists who analysed climate change and its consequences with a multidimensional perspective. Featuring Climate-related issues at formal places like art galleries and at informal public spaces can play a huge role in generating consensus among the wider population for a global struggle against the system of unhindered exploitation of Nature. The incessant exposure to the devastation of our environment via visual stimulation cuts deeper than words and facts ever can. Art makes long-lasting impression on individuals in ways not realized by the person him/herself.

The dying rainforests, the disappearing chirping of birds, dark polluted sky and deoxygenated water are all the consequences of human greed and self-interest. We possess no authority to disrupt the balance of the biosphere, rather it is our duty to act by the reason and strive for a sustainable future.
