Do you know where your coffee comes from?

Let’s know a little more about our all-time favourite beverage coffee. Coffee plays an important role in our daily life and most of us usually start our day with a cup of coffee and we generally don’t even know where our coffee comes from? A student who has graduated from Northeastern University, Miriam Morales knows the exact origin of the coffee beans and she has explained many facts about it.

Coffee beans are the seeds inside the coffee plant’s cherry. Coffee cherries are mostly handpicked and then coffee cherries are de-pulped within 24 hours of picking. The coffee beans are spread over large concrete slabs to be dried by the sun, then a hulling machine removes the dried pulp, parchment and silver skin from the exterior of the beans. Coffee beans are sorted by hand for quality control, making sure that every bean meets the highest quality standard.

Coffee beans are placed in burlap sacks, labeled and prepped for shipping. Each sack can weigh 100-150+ pounds, coffee is shipped worldwide by cargo ships, trucks, trains, and planes. Once at the port, coffee beans are inspected and transported to specialty coffee roasters and stores. Coffee beans are roasted in large coffee roasting machines. Coffee beans are green before being roasted, the beans are slowly roasted until they turn light, medium or dark brown. The darker the colour, the stronger the flavour. The roasted beans are quickly cooled and turned in the cooling basket. Once the beans are cooled, they are placed in tubs to get ready for packaging, beans are then weighed on a scale and placed into bags. Bags are then properly scaled to ensure coffee freshness. Now it’s time to grind some coffee beans and let the flavour out and served right away for the freshest flavour. Whether you like it to be black, hot, cold, with milk and with sugar. Coffee is enjoyed around the world by millions of people every day.
