Elections are something which creates a sense of responsibility among the people of a country, it reminds people of the fact that they have the right to vote and decide their future. They have the right to build their future by voting for a leader who they feel is truly capable of leading them. However, not everyone understands their responsibility. They do not really feel that their vote can make a difference. This is what persuaded government to spread awareness regarding the importance of voting and to a surprise there is an increase in the voters mainly consisting of the first-time voters or the Millennial voters. But do you think these new voters or to be more precise, the millennial voters have any effect on the oldies? Pete Buttigieg currently 37 years old and won his first mayoral race in Indiana when he was 29 years old, he said that it is the voters of his age who have the most at stake when it comes to policy making.
“By definition, the longer you’re planning to be here, the more you have a stake in the decisions that are being made right now,” he said.
He is currently exploring a run for the presidency, dug into issues that he said will have an outsize effect on the millennial voters. during a wide-ranging conversation with WBUR senior news correspondent Kimberly Atkins at the Northeastern University’s Boston campus.
“It’s why I’m always talking about the need to consider the world as it will look in 2054, when I get to the current age of the current president,” said Buttigieg.
A generational divide has been observed between the younger and older voters. A widening differences in the political opinions of the millennials and generation Xers as compared to baby boomers and members of the silent generation.
“As the generation that’s poised to be the first in American history to be worse off than our parents, we’re insisting that we get a better answer on how our economy is going to be more just and more equitable than just saying, ‘Well, a rising tide lifts all boats.’ Because it just doesn’t,” Buttigieg said.
Hence, the only one at the stake are the middle-aged people.
