We see Individuals around us talking different-different languages, having various religions. Some touches feet while some bend their head as a respect to the elders. We can likewise observe the decent varieties in their dress. Some wear white on marriage while some wear white in mourning. And also take a look at their listening music. Some listen to pop while some listen to old 90’s songs. Yet inside every one of these decent varieties, there is a hidden bond which connects different societies to communities, different communities to a nation and different nation to a completely perfect world. This bond describes unity, love, and strength and is called Diversity. Also said in Hindi,”Vividhta mein Ekta“. Diversity means the state of being diverse. Diversity includes knowing how to relate to those qualities and conditions that are different from our own and outside the groups to which we belong, yet are present in other individuals and groups. People from diverse racial and ethnical background bring unique and varying perspectives to the workplace.
Diversity is gender-based but gender diversity isn’t just about the number of women and men in the community. A community is called gender diverse when men, women, and transgenders are respected and have equal opportunities to work within the community. A Muslim donates his blood for a Hindu in the month of Ramadan to save his life and doesn’t hesitate once in doing so. A Sardar opens his pagri to stop the bleeding of a Muslim who had met with an accident. A candle is lit by a Hindu in the church as a tribute of respect to Jesus. This is a truly diverse religious community.
An hour-long event was sponsored by the John D. O Bryant African-American Institute, as a part of “50 Years Forward: The Journey Continues“, Northeastern University’s yearlong commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. He asked each panelist to describe diversity in a single word. While one said opportunity, to another, diversity was a necessity.
Working effectively with diversity and promoting equality of opportunity is an essential part of our nation’s success. Diverse societies are one which can harness the talents of different groups of people to make for a more robust economy. Diversity is about all of us. It simply means how we walk through this world together.
