Different emotions & different needs

For years, mental illness has been a huge taboo in our society and continues to be so. Our mental health comprises of stuff that exists in our personal lives, professional lives as well as any trauma or hard time we may have gone through. However, the issue doesn’t only lie in the difficulties we face, it also lies in the solutions. Every human being has different emotions that go on overdrive when we are mentally ill and that lays the foundation of us having different emotions & different needs. To elaborate on this, we first need to know what exactly mental health is.

Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Theresa Osypuk, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Sciences in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences and an interdisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians of Northeastern University, recently published their findings in Pediatrics and Archives of General Psychiatry, two professional peer-reviewed journals. They found that adolescents who have pre-existing health conditions or had been exposed to violent crime while living in public housing did not benefit from moving into private-market rental properties. In some cases, their mental health grew worse.

The above finding makes us wonder, how exactly do therapists handle and advise their patients on their various mental health issues, when each one of them are so different from one another? When a person lives in public housing, their habits and upbringing turn out to be very different from the ones who live in private housing. So, even though private housing may provide them with security and clean and healthy shelter, plucking them out of their community where they were born and brought up doesn’t make them feel as if they fit in. On the contrary, they start to feel like outsiders and their mental health worsens due to feelings of loneliness.

Therefore, for mental illness, people need therapies, treatments, and psychotherapy tailored according to their individual needs where each and every one of their insecurities, fears, and other issues are dealt with the right amount of understanding, love, and care. Everyone who goes through mental illness has certain emotions that occupy their being all the time, whether they are fears, abandonment issues, loneliness, jealousy or social anxiety. That pushes therapists to deal with every one of us differently, as different emotions have different needs.
