Computers are more human than you think

Computers are the most perfect students, but when they have biased teachers, their purpose faces a  pitfall. Computers are only as good as their makers. Biased algorithms and data can be a terrible blow in this age of Artificial Intelligence.

At this point, everything is interconnected to Artificial Intelligence. For instance, the song recommendation in any kind of streaming service is AI, more specifically Machine Learning. Computers cannot do this spontaneously; they learn how to do this based on what they’ve seen and that is why it is called Machine Learning. The network gains knowledge every time it absorbs new information until, eventually, it can make its own.

Sarah Ostadabbas, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Northeastern University, is trying to prevent bed-ridden patients from getting bed sores which are caused due to staying in the same position for too long. The goal that she is working towards creating an algorithm and synthetic data so that the computer will be able to find the position of the body from the low rest picture of the patient taken from above and in the dark. This will help the nurses to readjust the position of the body when required.

Talking about synthetic data, Byron Wallace, an assistant professor of computer science and director of Bachelor of Science in Data Science at Khoury College of Computer Sciences, says, “Once you have a model that generates synthetic data, if you try to use that subsequently to learn to generate more synthetic data you are not going to be able to learn to do better than the data that you are already generating.”

Tina Eliassi-Rad, an associate professor of computer science at Khoury College of Computer Sciences, says that computers just absorb what their master’s instruct and the data that is fed into it. Thus AI can be managed well by people, and it can cause trouble only when we can’t manage ourselves.
