Challenging rules and becoming role models

Carole Shapazian is a Northeastern University Graduate who has been working as bench chemist for five decades now. Since she began, the workplace was not equal for men and women. She has been challenging the unequal treatment and rules implied for over 30 years of her working period.

She talked about the variation in rules and regulations on basis of ones gender in the company she was working for.“There were rules for promotions that were different for women. There were two pay scales. There were rules around pregnancy. A woman could not supervise a man.”

Eventually rising to the rank of the assistant chief officer, Carole had new challenges to face. On Thursday, she was  honored at the Northeastern University’s annual volunteer leadership summit, Networked for Life, for her contributions to the university and its missions. “We will be celebrating the impact of what you have done, to show how your investments of time, energy, and treasure have allowed (the Northeastern community) to soar. The power of networks, the power of role models, and the power of experience—that is why we are here today.” said President Joseph E. Aoun, on the graduates who received the award.

“This university has been built on something that differentiates it from all other universities all over the world. The experiences of Northeastern students start with co-op and end with entrepreneurship, with cultural agility, with global exploration.”
