We have been hearing about Brexit since 2016 but unfortunately, that hasn’t been accomplished because of the lack of plans with the United Kingdom government for its exit and without a proper plan, its exit won’t be preferred both by United Kingdom’s government and the European Union. Let’s dig deeper into the issue.
“Brexit”, an abbreviation for “British Exit”. It is referred to the UK’s decision in a June 23, 2016 referendum to leave the European Union(EU). This potential withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union was taken in consideration of the 51.9% voters who voted in support of leaving the European Union. Since then the Brexit has been extended and yet it is one of those many times that an extension is issued on Brexit, this year too. The extension means, United Kingdom will participate in the election of the new European Parliament on May 23. Therefore, the United Kingdom would also be able to influence the decision of who will be in power in a bloc. These extensions clearly explain the internal turmoil within the United Kingdom’s government. Whatsoever might the United Kingdom’s government be thinking but
“It’s only serving to make the bond among the 27 other member states in the European Union stronger,” says the Northeastern University‘s political science professor Mai’a Cross. “Brexit, if anything, has solidified a sense of commonality among the other E.U. member- states. It’s confirmation that doing something drastic like leaving the E.U. isn’t worth it,” says Cross, who is the Edward W. Brooke Professor of Political Science, and whose research focuses on international cooperation and European foreign policy.
As the United Kingdom will influence the decision of who will be in power, they might create a problem but as long as they are sure about their leaving, they won’t be interested in coming between their way. This is the most reasonable and respectful thing expected from the United Kingdom.
“These cycles of extensions are getting to the point of ridiculousness,” Cross said.
The patience of the E.U. would have worn incredibly thin by the next extension.
