Bike laws, their necessity, and importance

As fun as bike rides are, they are may also sometimes lead to accidents. Especially among kids, bike riding is a fun sport. While on the road, maintaining safety even while riding a bike is very important. The Northeastern University Police Department, NUPD hosted a community bike clinic that would teach kids about bike safety and its importance. It was NUPD’s first-ever such clinic which was started in July 2018. The clinic aimed to spread awareness among people about the necessary safety measures for riding a bike. The clinic will also teach the children laws that are important while riding a bike, necessary safety tips, hand gestures, and signals, as well as agility drills. The children will also learn how to do minor repairs in their bikes when required.

“This is a great way for us to engage with the community and teach some valuable safety skills that children can use for the rest of their lives.” “Young people can’t wait till the day they can kick the training wheels off,” said John Farrell, staff sergeant for the NUPD, “and we wanted to get caught up in the spirit.”

Officer Rachel Jolliffe, of NUPD Community Engagement Unit, came up with the idea of the bike clinic. The officers of NUPD also wishes to make the clinic an annual tradition which is hosted in the Northeastern University Campus. Amongst neighbouring towns and cities, this initiative taken up by the NUPD is the first of its kind. There were immense efforts and contribution of the officers involved that made this clinic happen.  The NUPD also involved student volunteers in this clinic. The students with some knowledge about biking taught skills to the children who came to attend the clinic from the neighbouring community.
