The entire course of medicine studies deals with its students using technology tools to detect their patient’s health. The use of this high-tech diagnostic equipment improves the identification of disorders or diseases if any. However, the experience becomes profound when there are no medical tools used.
Such an experience was noted by Emma Stratton and Meghan Ferriera, graduates of the Physician Assistant Program at Northeastern University. During their five-week clinical rotation, they came across various clinical emergencies including shark bites, machete wounds, malaria, parasites, etc. They did not have the proper equipment like CT scanners and other machines and hence, they had to depend on their diagnostic skills.
Technology makes things easier but without its availability, the experience instills confidence in the doctor’s ability. According to Ferriera, the lack of technology proved that the diagnostic skills of a doctor can help the patients in their recovery.
People staying in rural or semi-urban areas are not aware of any medicines and treatments for various diseases because of their lack of access to proper physicians and other health care professionals. Because of this rural communities have long struggled to maintain access to quality health care services. Therefore, when Ferriera started her practice in Belize, she would have a lot of patients including all members of a family. They would prefer to get everybody checked since it was rare for them to find and see a medical practitioner. Even if the necessary equipment were not available, Ferriera made sure that proper treatments were given.
It was an immense pleasure for Ferriera and Stratton to serve these people who were in the utmost need of medical attention and aid. They require urgent attention and it is high time that we redefine health care and make a determined effort to improve their conditions.
