Substance abuse can be hazardous to an extent where it destroys and ends the life of people. Amy Winehouse, a pop singer was also one of the victims of addiction. Hortensia Amaro, a professor in the Bouvé College of Health Sciences at Northeastern University discussed the behaviours of individuals who struggle with substance abuse.
It becomes very difficult for people to approach for help and treatment. They are scared of the stigma of addiction and the obligation to leave those habits creates fear. The start of this abuse occurs when any trauma and emotions related to it overpowers your mind. The users refuse the treatment as they think that they can control and quit whenever they want. Family and friends also help in the recovery of this addiction disorder. They can contact self – help and counselling programs for guidance.
There is no direct connection between fame and addiction but according to Amaro, fame at a young age gives an increased financial status leading to independence. There are issues of audience expectations and pressures, hectic schedules that cause psychological traumas, and various mental health problems. To cope up with this sudden change in life, drugs, unfortunately, becomes a solution. Sometimes a disturbing family history also can be one of the reasons behind addiction.
According to a few sources Winehouse was introduced to cocaine by her husband. By this, one understands that it is important for an addict to surround himself with people who will encourage him or her for treatment. These positive role models can be their partners, friends, and family members. It is essential that they remain away from friends who are into substance abuse as it will increase the rate of addiction. With such a continuous and encouraging contact with drugs, the craving will never decrease leading to dangerous consequences.
